TO BE A SUCCESSFUL LEADER, YOU MUST ASK QUESTIONS
Leadership entails asking the right questions
A question is an expression that normally operates as an information request and is anticipated to be met with a response.
We can have more than one leader in the workplace. We interact with Project Leaders, Product Leaders, and Team Leaders the most. It is the team leader's responsibility to guide his or her team through the oceans of work, progress, unknowns, and other challenges. And most of the time, team leaders are expected to serve as role models for their subordinates. As humans, we learn from one another and reflect the impact of our elders in our acts, believing that is how I should act. It is quite confusing for leaders. In our managerial experience, we've seen leaders frequently presume that others look to them for answers, not simply subordinates — bold statements that build confidence in their competence.
Leaders, on the other hand, should ask probing, ambitious questions. But rather than simply asking questions, shouldn't we know the ANSWERS? Few leaders think in this manner. If you have a well-versed solution, you should surely deliver it to save time or give direction, depending on your management style. But, if you don't know the answers, keep asking. We generally manage millennials and if you try to answer everything with your superficial knowledge, you may lose your position in this way.
Asking questions can be challenging if you have been the type of leader that has or wishes to have all the answers. But the good news is that we can create it.
Thinking in terms of questions
When we were in college and prepared for group discussions, trainer recommended that we all think in terms of questions. We practiced this by asking and answering questions on everyday topics. We used to be astounded by the knowledge that would come from those casual conversations. So, if a leader does the same, it —
- It helps in dig deeper
- It helps in pause to reflect.
- It helps in being a better leader
Question without the replies
It is clear that if you ask powerful and motivating questions, you will not always get responses. One of the most fundamental parts of developing trust is sharing one's vulnerabilities. We should state unequivocally that we do not know the solution to this critical question. The next part of leadership (typically used to distinguish leaders from bosses) is Together. Seek for the answers with the team.
- Helps in reducing the anxiety of the person you asked questions.
- It gives you a better understanding of the issue.
- You enlist the help of numerous stakeholders to develop solutions, and this is when you and your team discover new dimensions.
- Thinking collaboratively can help you overcome difficult problems and flourish at imaginative thinking.
What You Shouldn't Ask
Doing this can lead to you asking some relevant questions, which put some people in a difficult position. As a result, rather than being beneficial, this practice becomes detrimental.
Is something missing here?
Why didn't you notice this corner sooner?
And how do you intend to go about it?
These not only increase the worry of the person presenting to you, but also create the possibility of losing trust. So, while inquiring, be mindful and empathic.
Asking helps you become a better leader
We leaders sometimes fear asking questions because we know they won't know the answers. Concentrating your inquiries on new and huge prospects rather than the company's existing practices/activities might also help you overcome your anxiety that questioning will be perceived as a sign of weakness because there's no way you could be believed to know the answers.
Leaders who ask strong questions are the most successful at seizing new possibilities and overcoming unanticipated obstacles — and they create cultures that will bring these advantages into the future.
Finally, some words of self-development advise. You should also ask some questions. This paves the path out of difficult situations.
